The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
